City-Wide Area Commission Election Information

The City of Columbus is exploring a standardized city-wide election process for Area Commissions. Currently, Area Commissions around Columbus neighborhoods follow various timelines that are separate and apart from one another as well as from general and special elections.

This pilot project would begin in 2022 and is under current consideration by the CAC Elections Committee.

  1. While it may be unsettling to some that CAC would need to change its ways in electing its commissioners, there are positives to consider. One big benefit to standardizing elections to the same dates as other commissions would be that informing the public would be easier, because all of the commissions are electing at the same time, more media would be inclined to report on the goings-on, more social media activity would be likely, and hence more overall visibility would result. Voter participation might actually increase, which is something that the CAC has strived for over the years with limited results.
Some details need to be fleshed out, but this could be very positive.
